Because of his primacy in portrait sculpture, David McFall was invited to model the heads of the most eminent people of the day. The biographies of his sitters encompass much of the history of the mid-20th century. More details are accessible by clicking on the photographs on the Busts and Heads page, and they include the father of the National Health Service (Sir Gorge Godber); two Prime Ministers (Winston Churchill and Clement Attlee); several ‘spooks’ (including Ellic Howe); music composers and artists (including Ralph Vaughan Williams, Sir Steuart Wilson and Oda Slobodskaya); politicians and pioneers (including Lord Brabazon of Tara, who held the first UK pilot’s licence in addition to being a long-suffering government minister under Churchill); eminent medical men and last but not least friends and, especially, beautiful women.
Many of these names will be unfamiliar to a 21st century audience, but there are some fascinating stories as well as some stunning portrait sculpture. McFall’s portraits ensure that history does not forget those who shaped the UK, and in some instances the world, in the 20th century.
